Editorial Policy

People rely on this site when money is tight, so accuracy and honesty matter. This page explains the standards we hold our content to.

Our sources

We build guides from primary and authoritative sources: federal and state agencies (such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Energy, the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Health and Human Services), recognized national networks such as 211 and Feeding America, and established nonprofits. Each guide ends with a list of official sources so you can check the details yourself. We do not rely on forums, social media posts or anonymous claims for facts about eligibility or benefits.

How guides are written

  • Plain language. We explain programs the way we would to a friend: who may qualify, what to gather, how to apply and what to expect.
  • Official source first. We direct readers to the agency or nonprofit that runs the program and never collect applications ourselves.
  • Honest about limits. Where rules differ by state or change frequently, we say so rather than guess. We avoid quoting dollar amounts and income limits that change often, and instead point to the official figure.
  • No guarantees. We never promise that a reader will qualify or receive a benefit.

Keeping content current

Every guide shows the date it was last updated. We aim to review each guide at least twice a year and sooner when a major program change is announced. Guides are also checked when readers report an error.

Corrections

If you find a mistake or an outdated detail, please tell us. We review corrections promptly, update the page and refresh its “Updated” date. Significant corrections are noted in the guide.

Advertising and independence

  • No advertising is currently shown. If advertising is added in future, ads will be clearly labelled and kept separate from guides.
  • We do not accept payment to list, rank or recommend any program, provider or organization.
  • Any future advertisers cannot review or change our content.
  • We do not run sponsored posts or paid reviews.
